SCI-Arc Exhibition Anisotropy/Anisotropie by
Paris-based architecture firm Odile Decq Benoît Cornette
960 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013
SCI-Arc is pleased to announce the exhibition Anisotropy/Anisotropie by Paris-based architecture firm Odile Decq Benoît Cornette, on view in the SCI-Arc Gallery from October 14 through December 4, 2011.
Constructed of mirror-clad walls that create a series of unique geometric spaces, the installation invites visitors to make their way through these spaces while experiencing a constant play of reflection and illusions. Decq’s exhibition aims to induce a sensory experience, both vivid and discomforting, one that pulls the human mind in various directions simultaneously. The primary geometry of each space is the triangle, but by inclining the walls at different angles, the architect forces visitors to perceive the space as something different. Furthermore, due to the reflective quality of the walls, as visitors move through the space, they experience each of its sections as being infinite. Each is dis-functional—as to alter and obscure the perception we construct of the space—and each places the mind in a constant state of disorientation: first in time, then in place, and finally in person.

Park[ing] Day LA – “Edible Streets!”
“an annual, worldwide event that transforms metered parking spots into temporary parks for the public good”
On Friday, September 16, the 5th annual celebration of Park[ing] Day LA hits the streets as “Park-itects” throughout the city step up to the curb, put a quarter in the meter, and proceed to transform metered curbside parking into urban parks, just for the day.
Park[ing] Day LA challenges the status quo and is designed to stir a conversation or dialogue on open space, public space, green space, and to inspire a vision of a city where “Streets are for People!”
Last year’s participants included a professor who taught his class out on the street, a chef who set up a kitchen and cooked for friends, planning students who demonstrated urban farming, merchants who held a wild, wild westside roundup, architects who created a Town Square in Westwood, artists who built a koi pond on a downtown street, designers who built a Zen garden and visionaries who used the opportunity to present plans for permanent parks.
There was a barber who set up shop, musicians who entertained, horticulturists who returned the street to our chaparral legacy, and groups of cyclists who led bike tours throughout the city.

6032 Wilshire Blvd., LA CA 90036
For the first time, the words of Charles and Ray Eames will be the lens of an exhibit, enveloping the visitor in a 21st century typographic “surround”. Their philosophy of design and life will be explored through Eames’ quotes, shown graphically (as well as live on film), and complemented by the display of unexpected everyday objects, ranging from food to a keg of nails, to an inter-active digital experience. Their appreciation of humble objects is a special gift to the world – during their lifetimes and continuing today. Generations of designers and the public have been affected by their appreciation of the joys of daily life.

AIA Pasadena & Foothill Home Tour – Douglas S. Ewing, FAIA
11:00 am – 4:00 pm
Pasadena is a great turn of the century city that has evolved with its diverse architectural styles including Arts & Crafts, European eclectic and historical styles, to contextual regionalism merging into contemporary. This architectural diversity has enriched the senses architect, Douglas S. Ewing and has influenced him to design contextual styles that fit into the fabric of Pasadena.
This tour is about aesthetic diversity. Ewing chose a post & beam renovation and expansion of a Buff & Hensman house, a restoration of a Swiss chalet clad with logs, a new contextual Spanish eclectic/Arts & Crafts inspired design, a new heavy timber contemporary open plan aesthetic, and an Asian inspired Arts & Crafts house on the Annandale Golf Course. These projects are very indoor/ outdoor in concept, full of custom detailing, custom furniture, and great craftsmanship. The tour should be different and interesting.

Annual Venice Garden and Home Tour 2011
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
This annual self-guided walking tour will feature 30 gardens and homes in the charming, secluded Walk Streets neighborhood and streets south of Venice Boulevard. The tour is a showcase of how architects, landscape designers, and homeowners have crafted gardens and homes to make lovely living oases. These private spaces, sequestered behind carved wooden doors, contemporary metal gates and imaginative fences, are open to the public this one day of every year when tour-goers can walk the streets, meet and enjoy the community, and be inspired by the inventive design, surprising spirit and whimsy that is uniquely Venice.

SCI-Arc Gallery Exhibition Discussion
Architect Barbara Bestor and SCI-Arc Director Eric Owen Moss
SCI-Arc Gallery
960 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013
Friday, April 22, 7-9pm
Special event, Disco Callado, in the SCI-Arc Gallery, hosted in conjunction with the SCI-Arc Spring Show and Undergraduate Thesis
Architecture students are the “imagined” client for this temporary disco installation. Providing respite from the institutional production of architecture with a lightly hedonistic program, Silent Disco aims to support social and communal experiences. The architectural project here is not limited to the execution of a design and its special effects, but a framework to encourage visual, physical and social pleasure. The design of the structure is an overscaled, unfolded demi-dodecahedron model that contains a strong graphic interface.
