39-A + The Image of the City + A Necessary Ruin
A
Necessary Ruin Upon its completion in October 1958, the Union Tank Car
Dome, located north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was the largest
clear-span structure in the world. Based on the engineering principles
of the visionary design scientist and philosopher Buckminster Fuller,
this geodesic dome was, at 384 feet in diameter, the first large scale
example of this building type. A Necessary Ruin relates the powerful,
compelling
narrative of the dome's history via interviews with architects,
engineers, preservationists, media, and artists; animated sequences
demonstrating the operation of the facility; and hundreds of rare
photographs and video segments taken during the dome's construction,
decline, and demolition.
Screening
will take place in A+D's backyard. Bring a picnic! Beers on us thanks
to Karl Strauss. Discussion will begin at 7:30 and the screening at
8:00PM. Space is limited.

Reception 4 - 7pm
Architect Davida Rochlin
only started to think about the new American porch after devoting much
of her life to pondering the old American porch. She spent her
childhood in a Craftsman house that had "all kinds of porches," she
said. As a graduate student in architecture at UC Berkeley, Rochlin
traveled across the country studying verandas, balconies, stoops, back
porches, front porches, sleeping porches, screened porches, wrap-around
porches, you-name-it porches -- all for her master's thesis.
One
wall is devoted to Roshlin's drawings of historical porches. Another
wall features porches designed that she has designed in a modern
vernacular. Sentimentalists should be warned: They are different.
In celebration of "The New American Porch", Loll Designs will be showcasing our new collection of outdoor furniture designs.

Denizen
owner Megan Griffith has not only taken an art space and showcased furnishings
as exhibits; she's created a gallery where form truly becomes function. This
3,500 -square-foot showroom focuses on the convergence of cutting-edge designers
and eco-friendly practices. The latest: Brightly colored, quirky and infinitely
usable Adirondack chairs (crafted entirely from recycled milk jugs and margarine
tubs) from Loll Designs, and ultra-chic pieces from Urban Woods, a group of designers who fashion furniture from
reclaimed, SoCal-salvaged wood. Denizen also hosts monthly receptions to
introduce new artists - both traditional designers as well as those visionaries
who transform last months refused into tomorrow's coffee table.
